President’s Message 2025

As I step into the role of the 39th  President of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SLCOG), I am deeply honored by the trust you have placed in me. Having been a proud member of this esteemed College for 22 years and serving on its Council since 2008, I have witnessed the unwavering dedication and commitment of our fraternity to advancing women’s health in Sri Lanka. It is an honor to now lead this journey forward.

This year, our theme, “Improving Reproductive Health of Women, Challenges and Opportunities – An Evidence-Based Approach,” reflects our collective mission to address the pressing issues faced by women across all stages of their reproductive journey. Despite significant advancements, disparities persist, presenting both challenges to overcome and opportunities to seize in delivering equitable and high-quality care.

Reproductive health lies at the core of public health, with its impact extending to families, communities, and nations. As such, our focus must be strategic, inclusive, and above all, evidence driven. By leveraging the latest scientific research and clinical innovations, we can ensure that every woman, regardless of her socio-economic background, receives care that is not only safe and effective but also in a respectful and compassionate way.

During my tenure, I will prioritize initiatives aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by enhancing training programs for healthcare providers and advocating for policies that support universal access to reproductive health services. By strengthening training programs for healthcare providers, I aim to equip them with the latest knowledge and skills to meet global standards, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective care.

Enhancing collaboration with local organizations such as Ministry of Health, Family Health Bureau, UN agencies and international organizations such as FIGO, SAFOG, and AOFOG will allow us to leverage their expertise and resources, fostering a collective approach to advancing women’s health. Moreover, I hope to improve research and innovation which are pivotal in identifying sustainable, evidence-based solutions to the complex challenges inherent in reproductive health.

I am inspired by the dedication of our members and the legacy of our past leaders. I will provide my maximum effort to navigate the challenges ahead, transforming them into opportunities for the betterment of women’s health in Sri Lanka.

Thank you.

Warm regards,

Dr. Sanath P. Akmeemana

President, SLCOG
