President’s Message 2026
It is with profound honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I assume office as President of
the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (SLCOG). I am sincerely grateful to
the membership for the trust placed in me to lead this esteemed College at a pivotal time for
women’s health in our country.
The theme for my presidency is:
“Bridging Gaps in Women’s Health: Through Collaboration, Education, Training and
Research.”
A key priority during my tenure will be to address preventable maternal deaths through the
development of evidence-based national guidelines, structured care bundles, and continuous
training programmes for healthcare staff at all levels. Our Essesntials of Obstetric at Your
Doorstep (EOD) and Safe Motherhood initiatives will be further strengthened to ensure rapid
recognition and effective management of obstetric emergencies.
Recognizing the vital role of the Public Health Midwife as the backbone of maternity care,
SLCOG will actively support structured midwifery training and continuing professional
development to enhance competency and service quality at community level.
In parallel, SLCOG will focus on quality improvement in obstetric care, safe optimization of
caesarean delivery rates, strengthening HPV based screening, expanding colposcopy services,
improved access to subfertility and ART services, mental health integration in maternity care,
reproductive health research, and work with governmental and non-governmental organizations
to upgrade delivery of reproductive healthcare.
SLCOG carries a proud legacy built by visionary leaders and dedicated members. I am inspired
by their contributions and remain committed to upholding the College’s values while steering it
towards greater academic strength and national impact.
Together, let us work with unity and purpose to bridge existing gaps and shape a healthier future
for women across Sri Lanka.
Thank you.
Prof. Rukshan C. Fernandopulle
