Esala Bana Programme at SLCOG House
A Dharma Deshana was held at the SLCOG House on 27 th July 2025 in commemoration of
Esala Poya (the day of full moon during the month of July) with the participation of a large gathering
comprising of Members of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (SLCOG) along
with their families, well-wishers and staff of SLCOG.
Esala Poya is significant to Buddhists due to many reasons including it being the day of
Renunciation of worldly belongings by Prince Siddharatha, the day of the first Dhamma Sermon by
Lord Buddha and the beginning of the rainy season Retreat by the Maha Sangha.
From a historical perspective, the laying of the foundation stone for the Maha Thupa
(Ruwanweliseya) in Anuradhapura is known to have occurred on an Esala Poya day. Furthermore,
the world famous Kandy Esala Perahera pageant is held during the month of Esala (July) and involves
rituals that begin on the Esala Poya day such as the kap planting.
The Dhamma Sermon was delivered by Ven. Elamaldeniye Wimalawansha Thero, Chief
Incumbent of Sri Vijitharamaya, Kirullapone.
Following completion of associated traditional Buddhist customs, refreshments and dinner
was served to all participants.
The event was organised by Chairman, SLCOG Social Activities Dr. Sumith Warnasuriya in
collaboration with the Ladies Forum lead by Dr. (Mrs) Dasanthi Akmeemana.
